Winter Trail Run Series
21K - February 20, 2010
WTRS 21K Report
Well there you have it, another Winter Trail Run Series in the bag as
they say. To me personally it was the best year we have had and we do
go back a long time. The race distances seem to suit the ultra guys as
well as those running a trail race for the first time. It sure starts
the year off on the right foot, as you might say. The magic starts with
seeing runners turn up at Blue Jay with smiles and a hug for the old RD,
whatever the weather conditions. We sure did get the extremes this
year, but today was perfect for running the challenging 13 plus miles. I
know the out-of-state runners enjoyed their day in California.
My lead up to the race is usually checking on all
the entrants, names I know etc, and then the final thing is the latest
weather report. I always watch channel 4 weekday news in the morning.
For the most part they are pretty good… giving us perfect weather on the
last race was important, brought out some last minute first timers and
hopefully recruits for other trail races. Have to mention the magic
support I have had, from my regulars Bill and Sandy at the early morning
registration and finish line. Also the good mates who turn up and lend
a helping hand. My long time mate, Steve Harvey, helped me with course
markings and removal for every race. Steve is also the RD for ultras in
our local Cleveland National Forest, which I might add are doing very
well. See:
www.OldGoatRunners.com. All in all we don’t
have a bad team, along with the support of all my Forest Service mates
it wouldn’t go on and I know you support me in thanking them. Must give
a plug to my really old mate Doug for promptly adding my story and
results to my web site, which most seem to read and enjoy.
As for Saturday’s
21K race, the outcome was inevitable given the talent on the front line
as we waited for Virgil to give the order to run. At mile one I was
able to see the racers go by and out front was a very serious bunch… and
that was at mile one. There is always much to do while waiting for the
early finishers like remarking the course through Falcon Trail,
preparing the supply of food and drink. Must mention a few did go
astray after coming down the Main Divide Road, but all were accounted
for at the finish line.
Rain was always in
the air and the temperature did drop at times while we waited, but our
regular winner turned up right on time. Big Jon Clarke is amazing, by
turning up and winning the last 3 of the 4 series races gave him hero
status in my book. And being the guy he is, he always mentioned his
competitors with respect with comments like… “I never saw them after I
charged up Horse Thief Tail” That’s nice I thought! The camaraderie
shown with all the top runners is magic including my girls, and
Saturday’s winner Carey Edge with the Irish/Portsmouth accent was no
exception. Shame she had to leave early for her school-coaching job.
Second and third
overall have been battling it out every race, with 40 year-old Kevin
finishing nearly two and a half minutes in front of big Dean. The last
runner in the top ten was my mate Brian McDermott, only 16 minutes
separated that elite group of front runners. Lovely Carey was 11th
overall by the way, Sharon Dressel and the ever improving Stephie
Grant taking second and third respectively. Over 50 charming ladies were
in the race and that is all good for the sport, right guys!
All the award
winners deserve their medals. Must thank all the good people who stayed
around for the Award/Raffle, hopefully most of you won something nice.
Again thanks to A Snail Pace and my mate Bob for supporting the races,
they are the best running store in the country… Bob told me! Must thank
my mate Mike at E-Gel, he is all over my on-line entries.
My mate Chaz from
INKnBURN is supplying some nice personalized T-shirts for the overall 1,
2, 3 men and women Winter Trail Run Series winners. The men were our
winners on Saturday and the women were, 1st Stephanie Grant, 2nd Sharon
Dressel and 3rd Stephney Kinley . My mate Chaz will be
contacting you for sizes, etc. and he will ship the special boxed tech
shirts…. Can’t be bad hey!
Hope you liked this year’s series T-shirt and the
very special sweatshirt for runners finishing all 4 series races. Show
them off with pride, it could help spread the word about our special
sport. But I must mention for next year, please enter early, whether
for just one of the races or all 4, we are stuck with that limit of 150
runners. Of course, most would agree it would not be as personal if we
had 5,000 runners! I agree with that and there would definitely be some
dick-head talking when I am, hate that! Please be good to yourselves
over the racing season, running more is not always the best, quality is
most important. Don’t forget I will post my Sierra Summer Trail Race
Series near Yosemite starting July 17. Hey you might be vacationing
up there and the new races will, of course, include nice abuse from an
old bloke. My email address
bazhawley@sti.net will
get me anywhere if you want to give me a heads up.
Hug ye kids for me
and keep smiling. Much Love and Thanks from Big BAZ XX
