Winter Trail Run Series 12K Story - January 8, 2011
G’Day to one and all.
Another new year started with some good old fashioned magic. The weather turned out splendid, though chilly. No one complained about the rocks and or my trail markings in the woods. I bought enough to eat and drink considering we only had about 70 entrants ten days ago… Runners came out the woodwork including those late arrivals at Blue Jay. As you know, I need to obey our good mates at the Forest Service and their request is a limit of 150 runners per race. I will work something out. I don’t feel like I want to turn someone away on race morning! My mates Sands and Bill did have problems at the finish line with making sure we didn’t miss anyone. Any mistakes in the results are my responsibility, sorry. Maybe I need a new system… come on you bloody smart trail runners help me out! Obviously, as the races get longer there is more time between each runner to do our paperwork at the finish-line, that helps.
I hope everyone went away happy, I know my new good mate Jace Hinsley did, full of smiles as he strode across the finish line in under an hour! Previous winner Christian Haymes, wasn’t too far behind and was happy to take second overall. New bloke Jason Baldwin was third and promised me he will be back. Local favorite Michelle Barton didn’t have much trouble out there to get 8th place overall, she loves these trails. Her mate Holly Anderton came in second woman. Holly is becoming a threat and was happy with her 15th place overall. At the young age of 43, Sharon Dressel is willing to take 3rd place any day. Note the percentage of women runners that finished…. Wish I was still out there to enjoy the fun.
It is magic to instantly have a bunch of new mates in my events; maybe it is the fresh air or something. I am going into my 27th year of race directing and it really seems I have more fun now than ever before… hope you don’t mind me having fun! My good mate, Buffalo Bill McDermott became a grandpa last week… Congrats mate, hope to see Brian soon with family. Arden Fick did manage to finish. He & I used to run behind Buffalo Bill on Catalina Island 30 years ago…. Shit! Big Baz is very happy to see so many old faces that attend my little trail races in Blue Jay. Maybe one of these days I can wear a bib number and enjoy the old pain with me old mates!
Again we must thank Bill and Sands at the desk… their support over the years means a lot to me. The T-shirts will be printed before the next race. Make sure you have run at least 2 races before you put one on. Plus if you intend to run the whole series I will be making the special sweat shirts for all who finish all 4 of the trail series. Hope there was enough grub at the race and the ones that stayed around for the awards and the magic raffle enjoyed Big Baz’s entertainment. Must thank my new girl, Lauren, for helping hand out the awards, her and her mates seem to enjoy their day, as did a few noisy ladies that stayed to the end. As long as we have fun… my wine at home will not go bad if I am late.
So while I have your attention, please get your entries in early, I can only get away with so much with my Forest Service mates. Our good friend Virgil did retire, so I have to schmooze another FS person to keep my permit alive. One may notice the new toilet as you drove through the campground, we paid for that. OK this is me having to work on the results, not real magic on the computer. See you at the 15K.
thanks guys…. Much love Big BAZZA XXX
