Winter Trail Run Series 15K Report - January 22, 2011

It isn’t until I get home to Laguna Woods, clean up my old motor home, give away any food goodies to my old neighbors, taken my shower and opened an expensive bottle of red wine can I truly relax and ponder the day’s festivities.  Boy, Oh Boy, did we have another magic day in the woods up at Blue Jay.  Several of the first timers were upset they have only just found our little gem in Lower Blue Jay.  Where the hell have they been for the last 20 years?  Oh yes, it was back before some of the 15K runners were born, that I organize the first WTRS in the Cleveland National Forest.  I still love every minute, as you might have noticed.

We are in need of a cut off time with online race entries because getting up on a Saturday morning at 4 AM and reading that another 10 runners are showing up for the race, really gets up my nose!  Of course, I don’t want to turn anyone away, but because we are real close with our limit of 150 runners, I don’t want our mates at the Forest Service to get picky!  Please enter early!  I was sorry I didn’t take enough WTRS series shirts to hand out to those who have finished the first two runs.  Must be getting old with my judgment calls, but I have enough and they will appear at the 18K.  Those not returning, must let me know and I will send out the shirts my mail.

My Birthday girl, Miss M, had another magic day, she was real happy with all the attention she got - hey 40 is a magic age. She thanks all the runners for the signed card. Her dad 71 year old, Doug Malewicki was more than happy to hear she had won the women’s division…. Again!  Must thank Rufus Schneider for bringing a couple of her school track team, both ran well in their off season.  My Tustin Bells all had another fruitful day; I love their abuse!  All my thanks go out to all the new trail runners who say they are enjoying the WTRS…. Bill and Sands again handled all the hard work at the registration desk and finish line… they enjoy their day.  We had a nice lunch in SJC after the race to catch up with all the inner circle stuff.  Must thank Mr. Harvey for helping this old fart mark the course on Friday after I had a bad week with the flu.  Annie and Steve also retrieve all our trail markings.  Don’t forget the OG 50 Miler is still on at the end of March regardless of the bad wash-outs on the Main Divide. I will be out there abusing runners as usual.  Official course is still being worked on.

OK, as for the 15K race itself, the weather was magic; the 140 or so starters seemed to be excited as usual.  Maybe a few runners need to drink more liquid before they set off; some cramping was felt amongst a few. My trip out on the course to redirect the trail was eventful. I heard runners talking and found my mate LT complaining about a sore ankle… so we returned to Blue Jay mumbling about his injury, but agreeing it was the right thing to do.  I had gotten as far as the Iron Gate when I heard footsteps… shit I said; I like to beat the first runners back to the finish line, but not this time.  First timer, Big Tom Worthington raced passed me, closely followed by the 12K winner and local runner Jace Hinsley. Greg Moe was only seconds back in third place.  The winning time wasn’t too shabby, although he didn’t take the front until after the second mile…. How do they do that on that treacherous, rocky course!

Birthday girl, Michelle Barton, had a fast run coming in 11th overall.  Her running mate, Holly Anderson was less than 4 minutes back to run second and Jenny Fritzsche was real happy with her third place in the women’s division.  All age group winners where smiling for the camera at the awards.  The inclusion of New Balance and A Snail’s Pace teaming-up to offer some nice raffle prizes was a nice Saturday morning touch… Hope Monica can return with her new collection of running shoes.  I am sure most of you who hung around for a few laughs went away with some memorable delight from the raffle.  After your hard work on the trail it is nice to enjoy some awesomely deliciousl food and stimulating drink and telling a few lies among new mates.  My girl Lauren Gottlieb did another fine job with the awards…. We have a good team going I think?  Throw in some verbal abuse and snide comments from the gallery and you have the makings of a fun time.  Hope we can get together at the 18K… Please drink more; maybe carry a water bottle; just a Sunday tip from BAZZA.  Don’t forget to enter early; hope you are happy with the shirts and I am working on the sweat shirts for those who finish all the WTRS races.

Toodle Pip for now… English saying!    Much Love Big BAZ XXX
