Winter Trail Run Series 15K Report - January 19, 2013

Good evening fellow runners,

I am home enjoying a nice bottle of Shiraz, given to me by one of my runner mates. Did we have another magic day in Blue Jay Campground, or what?  The second race of the WTRS nearly out shined the 12K in a couple of ways, firstly only 2 runners beat me back to the finish line, after my redirecting job out on the trail.  How do those runners run so fast on such a difficult/technical course, hell knows!  Secondly, I didn’t think the weather could improve, but it sure did, right!

Some new faces showed up again, one hope’s they come back.  The 60 or 70 runners who picked up their series shirts seemed happy, anyone not collecting it I can send it if needed, just let me know. My support team is magic, all were on deck way before the first entrant arrived at Blue Jay, and again I am a very lucky boy.  Sorry about the new waiver policy, but the USATF are tightening down on the need to cover their ass from law suits. In my nearly 28 years of being an RD I have never been sued, but it seems those dick heads who feel it necessary to cause a race havoc are out there.  My good mate, Dean Dobberteen, took a terrible fall and removed part of his elbow, but that didn’t stop him coming in 4th overall.  It was nice to see my nearly birthday girl Michelle Barton out and about taking photos; she is hoping to start her running comeback next week.  We all wish her well.  Unfortunately, her dad pulled a hamstring only 2 miles out, sorry old man.  Also, Mark Donaldson, had his hammie go out too - only one mile into the race.

As for the race itself, Jon Clark shadowed Liam Clemans for many miles before making his move to win. Liam was only a minute back and Dominic Grossman was only 86 seconds behind Liam to take third overall. Must mention me mate Matt Ruiz, he is really improving, bettered his 12K place by 4 spots. We had 39 women finishers,  Katie De Splinter was a race-day entrant and took first place and 17th overall. Less than a minute later Stephanie Smith raced across the finish line and 3rd place overall was lovely smiling Annie Cierna.  My old mate Bob Norton enjoyed winning his age group medal, hey all is not lost when you are 74. At the other end of the age groups was my mate, 12 year old Brian Kelly, came in 64th overall and beat his dad Michael, you beauty!

My girl Julia along with Scott did start early to check on the trail, they seem to enjoy their quiet time together on the course.  Of course, Rick Herr, Julia’s hubby is watching very closely!  My mates Bill and Sandy enjoyed their day as did me mate Bob after missing the 12K due to sailing on the ocean waves and missing a plane.  Most of the food supply and drinks disappeared through the morning and the raffle/quiz questions kept everyone on their toes, some on their hands!  Hopefully we can do the same magic on February 2nd for the 18K.  I am monitoring the ones who will finish all races … Stephanie Smith suggested going back to hooded sweats for the series finishers.  Once I get a close enough guess on numbers I will go buy.  Anyone with any good suggestions please speak up, I will be offering more giveaways in the form of past year shirts if anyone is interested.  Finally thanks to all for vacating Lower Blue Jay when asked… as the races get longer the time limit will be extended. Remember - always keep thinking good things and anything can be achieved.

Much Love Big BAZ XXX

NOTE: Big Baz needs a real typist to help speed up getting these results out to all his runner friends... He'll even pay!  Volunteers contact Big Baz at: bazhawley@sti.net
(Better yet would be a spreadsheet hero who could set it up, so BAZ would merely enter the bib numbers and finish times, then click once & have Excel do the work using his existing entry form data base.)
