2013 WTRS 30K Results
Good Morning to each.
The ending to a Magic Winter series arrived and has gone, just like that! Totaling most things up in brief… The winter weather was magic, the trails in the Cleveland National Forest kept runners on their toes, most of the time. My support Crew and all the people who made it all happen on race day where again the best. But most of all through my eyes, without the runners who love the trails and turn up smiling and laughing at every Saturday morning race… You are Nuts and need Help!!!! Leaving a perfectly warm bed, maybe a warm partner. To drive 45 plus minutes up to 3,000 feet elevation, get abused by an old prick from another world, run on rock covered trails and other wild obstacles and finish still laughing! Not to mention you pay good money for the privilege with little in return. Go figure!
Besides all the bullshit, I think it was the best series yet, more runners came and some from faraway places. The first timers are questioning why they took so long to get the experience. Of course, the old timers are just too stupid to know any better, can’t mention names but you know who you are.
Running 12K is a little walk in the park for most, but moving up in distance to 30K is a little different as some runners found out. Losing a thousand feet in about 9 miles in 80 degree heat is one thing and it is still officially winter friends! The climb back up is a sure test for mind and body as a few related to me after they finished. Luckily my mate Big Scott stepped in at the 11th hour to man the Falls aid station, all the runners where grateful as hell. Thanks Scott.
The race itself got started in our favorite Lower Blue Jay location on time! Bill and Sandy again looked after the registration, I think we had 72 finely tuned athletes biting at the bit to race. A few I let start early, cos! Lovely Julia and Scott had taken off to attend to the Chiquita Trail before the fast demons charge down. A few words from Big Bobby from A Snail’s Pace and newly promoted Monica from New Balance we were all set to go.
Michele Barton and I took off soon after to get to the aid station at the Candy Store, where the Whittington’s had already assembled the table of drinks and goodies. Michele with camera in hand… and that’s all, took off into the woods to capture some good shots. About an hour past before Jon and Dean appeared, sounds like a 70's pop group! Both were sweating and breathing hard, maybe they were racing… then came a string of runners all of which were happy to see me… joke, Joyce! Our Queen of the Mountain came though followed by my new bride Annie Cierna... she doesn’t know it yet, of course. After about 20 runners had gone through Miss M and I drove back up the hill in time to prepare the food table. B and S were already set up at the finish line, pen in hand.
The smiling face of Dean Dobberteen came into view first… he said he had to dig deep and work hard the last 3.5 miles after leaving Scott at the aid station. The King of the Mountain, Mr. Jon Clark was only minutes back to claim second place. The big surprise was my mate Matt Ruiz taking third overall. He looked as fresh as when he started, best run ever he said. The other eye opener was to see the magic smile of Annie Cierna racing over the finish line to win the women’s division and coming in 12th overall. Tiffany Forster came 2nd and 15th overall, she was real happy. 47 year-old Myra Bragmen took third. All the lead girls had not seen Stephanie Smith… a tummy problem half way made it real hard to continue. My old San Diego mate Julia Canales was happy to be running again after a long injury problem.
Again there were many stories, few more cuts and bruises, but all in all another magic race. The special people who won the nice sand-blasted glass ware were happy as was all the award runners. Matt and Julia handed out all the give-away items. Don’t forget 10% off if you present your bib number at the A Snail’s Pace store in MV. By the way Monica did finish and is getting ready to finish the SJT50K on March 16th… I hope to see many of you there, even if you come just to help.
I did announce I am having the Second Annual BigBazBasheroo at Laguna Woods Village on Sunday March 17th, 4 to 7 PM… rented a nice room again, food, beer and soft drinks will be on hand. Those wanting to bring a bottle of red and maybe a salad dish, please do. You must let me know if you are coming by emailing me, so I can make sure how many to cater for. I will give you direction and which gate to enter etc. last year was a hoot, nice to see everyone with nice clean clothes on. Nice for me to relax enjoy and catch up with all the gossip on the races, see you there!
Again thanks to all and don’t forget to join Rob McNair
and I at the Shadow of the Giants 50K on June 8th this year
in Fish Camp… mad if you don’t come, just for the scenery and my abuse.
I do move up to my magic estate in Oakhurst on March 20th
returning in October. Much Love as always.
Lots of PHOTOS coming soon!
