Winter Trail Run Series WTRS 12K Story - January 4, 2014
The Magic is still there! 2014 WTRS 12K
Hey, we did it again. If you didnít have a magic day it was your own fault, even me mate Sam with his loss of blood after a heavy fall said it was another race to remember. As you all know or most of you heard, I may pull the plug after this year and be put out to pasture up in Oakhurst. After the magic words and the fun I had, how can I quit a good thing? Of course, I will make the decision later - hopefully I have plenty of time - I am a lucky bloke. My new mate, Mr. Lindemann, a first timer to down town Blue Jay made the morning real special with his donation of a nice bottle of my favorite Ozzie nectar, plus a case of expensive grog. I shared the beer, but will open the wine later when I get me Barbie going, lucky boy I know.
Nice to catch up with some old wankers from years past, of course, many had seen my OC Register Magazine article, which I might add was very well done. Amazing what a real photographer can do for an old athlete. I do know the editor Kedric Francis, he ran. The newbies seemed to enjoy the new experience of trail running, or walking which a few decided to doÖ they were very late getting back to their cars. I do allow walkers starting early, but when my crew has to hang around well after mid-day, it doesnít seem fair. I know most of you understand. The support I get from my kids, Julia, Rick, Matt and Scott is tip topÖ gives me time to get my hugs in when runners arrive. Canít say too much cos Julia will be after a raise in pay!
As for the 147 starters that set off from Blue Jay in brilliant sunshine, it was obvious it was going to be special for all. The new folks who arrived late, sorry but we start on time!!!! I did my usual job of going out on the trail to redirect an intersection with more arrows. I had made it back just in time to see my hero Jon Clark scream up the last hill to the finish line. Oh to be 39 again, but he was only home a short time before another newbie to my races crossed the finish line, big Mark Pokora. Third overall was regular top five finisher Liam Clemons, just missed out on breaking the hour. Good mate Rick and Matt took 4th and 5th place overall. Only one major crash on the testy/technical trail was a surprise.
In the womenís race, lovely Polly Crawford raced across the line in 18th position, followed closely by 15 years her junior UCI champ from last year, Annie Ciernia. In third place was a very happy Laura Morris. 51 magic huggable women finished.
The magic weather, food sauce and bar, kept a lot of runners around in Blue Jay for the exciting awards presentation and the popular quiz questions. Bob Morris from ďA Snailís PaceĒ our local running store was happy giving out a couple of gift certificates and goodies. All in all it was a shame we had to stop the party, but the 15K is coming up on the 18th. Had one problem with a runnerís car being left after we had cleaned up and ready to lock the gate. The sign at the Iron Gate told you the gate would be closed, hey my good Forest Service mate, Jeff, took control to allow us to leave the property. Maybe those knowing it is going to be a walk over tough terrain may consider an early start. I really do want everyone that enters the race to finish, but I donít want to make a cut-off time. DM and LG started early and both did well. Of course, old Doug won the 70-plus division; my hero Leon "I really was hit by a bus! What's your excuse?" Grey was not last. Eleven year old Gavin Cowdrey beat his older pop.
Must congratulate Philip Anthony for his WS100 finish last year, after a long absence Champ John Loeschhorn, a long time elite runner in OC, returned to the trails. The camaraderie we share at the WTRS is very special to me; I really donít think it would be the same with 500 runners. Donít worry, I am aware of my silliness and what I get away with. I assure you it is all meant to entertain, it does seem to work, right? So, for those that can make more of the series races, magic! The series T-shirts will be available and maybe you'll get lucky and get a hug and be able to answer the quiz questions. Please, please enter early as the 150 Forest Service limit must not be broken. Just keep smiling, it is amazing what can happen.
Much Love Big BAZ XX
P.S. Must thank my new young kids (Polly Crawfordís daughters) at the finish line for their help.
