Winter Trail Run Series 15K Report - January 18, 2014

2014  WTRS  15K  Story

Who were those North Koreans!!!!!  Good bloody blokes who seemed to enjoy their day in the Cleveland National Forest at the second race in this year’s WTRS.  We are so lucky, the weather was magic, no one got lost more than a few seconds on the tough course.  The support I get from my Kids, Julia, Rick, Matt and Scott is second to none.  As an RD, one cannot do without mates who try so hard to make things work right… thanks.  Again we had a bunch of new comers who were treated to another day of fun in the woods, especially runners who had not run trails before.  They found out it isn’t easy.  Those few who had to hit the medical tent….. Who cares!  The 12K winner Jon Clark was missed by his absence, but my new mate and first timer from ‘A Snail’s Pace’, Mike Powers, was as an adequate stand in.

Following the short, but hopefully entertaining non-scripted trail briefing, the 90 or so runners took off out of Blue Jay Campground.  I managed the short cut to see most of them at the mile mark, smiling and just happy to be running in the woods. The lead fast group were not holding hands as they passed in about 7 minutes. My trip out to re-mark the trail was uneventful, except for personal abuse from a few runners. Oh yes, I did meet up with mother and daughter on their casual Saturday morning walk.   I think I told them to get your ass moving.  They did finish, of course, as I am locking the iron-gate.

I returned to the finish line to find Julia and friends were all ready for the masses. Big Mike Powers came into view and finished under 1:08 and smiling, closely followed by local trail runner and Coach Liam Clemons. Tall Mark Pokora followed just 5 seconds later to finish off the top three blokes. RH and MR did their usual top five finishes.

The women racers were not far back, led by 44 year old Laura Morris, she loved it out there. My ever loveable Annie Cierna came in second with a couple of scratches, followed closely by third place 42 year old Christy Baker.  There is something about hugging sweaty bodies!

The entire award winners ran well, I must mention me long time mate Doug Malewicki who again took the over 70 division.  Without his on-trail photos and award shots we would not have such a colorful web site…. Thanks mate.  I am real happy when runners stick around and enjoy a few cookies and a quiet beer and all seem to enjoy the Magic quiz questions.  Must thank my new mates at Asics for their last minute support and the fun we had at their expense!!!  Oh yes they are all coming back with more goodies to hand out. Special thanks to Horita and Kenjii… you’re great!  As for my, totally, abusive collection of desperates, who seem to enjoy abusing this old man.  “You are all Wankers”. But you know I love you and can’t wait to see you all again at the 18K on Feb 1.  On a personal note, I assure you all, I will try to keep things memorable for all my races for a few more years at least.   My evening glass of Lindemann’s wine on my own in my small old apartment  in Laguna Woods….and trying to remember all the stories I collect from people really make it all worthwhile. We are lucky to have what we have and good friendships mean a lot to me.  Hope to see you all soon and just keep smiling, it works.

Love Big BAZ XXX

P.S.  And a big hug for my new mate, Meaghan!  What a little princess.

NOTE from "engineer" Doug DMalewicki@cox.net - Don't forget to email me your GPS from the 15K.   Baz is seriously interested in improving accuracy in all his races (Now that you are all laughing - YES - that was a joke :-). This time we are going to learn if the old number of 3,502' of elevations gains collected with a Garmin 105 seven years ago in 2007 was real or bogus.

I am suspect of the my old Garmin 105 & now also suspect of the Garmin 305's.  Tossed Jeff Dinkin's 305 data out (In case you haven't met him - he is known as the "Stair Climbing Lunatic".  Ask him what that is all about when you get the chance.  Independently, Mark Donaldson questioned his old Garmin 305 data for the 15K & sent me his 2011 & 2012 15K data (see bottom table).  Let's do this for the 18K and 21K too.  Thanks.
