Shadow of the Giants 50K
2016 Shadow of the Giants 50K & 20K Fun Run - Race Report Story
Big Baz's 2016 Shadow 50k Story
Well THE PARTY may be over, but there is a new young, big and handsome bartender. This old bloke will exit left and hope the Shadow of the Giants will go on for many more decades.
But first, my last report and the weekends fun, gayety and love. After 27 years of putting on my favorite race and reporting, I find this has really outdone them all. We had magic weather, probably the same numbers in the 50K as usual, but the 20K really increased. My support team did their job as always. Of course, many little stories on the trail. I saw my share of heartache and pleasure… nothing sexual I assure you! My new Marine mates are a credit to whatever they do in uniform. The first timers were treated to a magic course, which we hope can remain each year. We cannot forget the many runners that have supported the event over the last 27 years; including me long time mate Rob McNair, who has finished them all. Oh yes Rob won a few too. He hopes to continue as long as his body is willing.
Lovely Fish Camp local, Karen Glendening, did a magic job at the finish line and was happy to have Julia and Nancy as support for the afternoon… we missed no one. I had lots of help at my aid stations. Me two new mates from Boston and big Johnathan handled the service at the first aid station superbly… I gave the abuse of course - they just laughed and were happy to see the runners at 3.5 miles. After that I shot off to do my other chores on Jackson Road. Not there but 5 minutes before the 50K leader Rick Herr dropped his left shoulder and took the left turn up to Mike’s aid station. A tall, tanned shadow was not far behind and eventually managed to pass a few miles later. At the location I was at, I get to see all the runners in both distances… the smiling faces, the hugs with sweaty bodies make my day. Finally my day on the course is over and I return to Green Meadows, but not before Dean Dobberteen passes me on Jackson Road in the lead with nearly 2 miles to go. Yes, he managed to win with a real good time. Thomas Warner was feeling great all day to finish 8 minutes behind Dean and me old mate Rick Herr was real happy to take third place.
As for my magic ladies… Lovely Sarah Ferguson came in laughing and real happy to win the race again and placing 9th overall…. Go Sarah. Elizabeth Ochoa enjoyed her day to be second with local Katie Burns coming in third. All the top places did good. As we know there were many first timers at the ultra- distance, including one of my favorite mates Mr. Local Champ himself JK Lundberg… oh to have his running talent, on roads or trails. Reno ultra-guy Frank Bozanich showed his true grit and talent to win the over 70 division and placed 62nd overall, beating half of the field of 123 runners! Not bad for an old f—k. All the award winners enjoyed their awards. The Race Raffle again was controlled by my mate Matt Ruiz with the help of the new bloke that will be in charge, keep forgetting his name. Lots of the maddening crowd won my expensive quality shit. It is nice to see runners hang around to support each other. Green Meadows again is a magic spot for the event. Friday night’s meal was tip top, made by Big Frank in the kitchen. Saturday’s help was masterfully controlled by Louis, his soup making was wonderful.
Finally, and I mean finally, I am a very lucky bloke to have been involved in 32 years of race directing, plus the many years I had running races, never knowing I would be an organizer of events. I am real happy to have met thousands of participants and I will never forget all the friendships. I assume you will all move on to running many events, hopefully including Shadow. As for myself I will stay focused on writing my book, drinking my wine, and hopefully see you all again. You can find me at firstname.lastname@example.org for now.
Much Love xoxoxoxoxo

Nearly forgot to thank our new course photographer…
Darryl has very reasonable $15 fee for high resolution photo downloads. His gallery more than likely has some nice photos of YOU either stomping through the creek or finishing. Sorry to say my, old mate Mark Haymond, our usual photo man has had a health problem, we all wish him well and a return to Fish Camp.
So my fellow mates and Julia this is me opening another bottle and I just hope to see you all at some time…. Keep up those slow miles like I try to. Much Love Big BAZ XX... and Thanks McDoogal
